Not sure where to start? Here’s The Summer Setup.
The system works best as a set, and the Basket is always the first piece. It lifts charcoal off the grill floor so air can move, burns stay cleaner, and cleanup takes seconds. Add the Can so it catches ash as it falls, which means cleanup takes less time and your grill is ready to go again. Then bring in the Divider. With direct and indirect heat at the same time, you can sear steaks, roast chicken, smoke ribs, or keep sides warm without rearranging coals mid-cook.
Wondering how this works with the parts that came with your grill? In many setups, the Kick Ash Basket is designed to replace the stock charcoal grate, also known by some grillers as that heavy “manhole cover” piece sitting under your charcoal. The Basket and Can work together underneath the fire to improve airflow and collect ash, while your ceramic heat deflector or plate setter can still be used above the fire when you want indirect heat for smoking, roasting, or low-and-slow cooking.
Buying just the Can without the Basket is a common miss. The Can is designed to work with the Basket. Without it, you still have to lift the grate, move the charcoal by hand, and empty ash the old way. Start with the Basket, or skip straight to the bundle for the whole setup.
